Moving Southward!

Today we headed out from Lamar CO for Boiling Springs State Park in OK. However, once we got travelling on the OK roads we made an executive decision not to continue...the roads there were washboard and very hard on the truck and trailer. Instead we regrouped and decided to head farther south, ending up in Canyon TX. This is basically an outshoot of Armarillo, kind of like Calgary and Cochrane.
Along the way we saw tons of windmills, not too suprising considering the wind that whistles through these areas.
Tomorrow we will check out some interesting things in Armarillo and hopefully have some pictures for you!

Heading South to Oklahoma

Today we left Pueblo, CO and headed to Lamar. Our travels yesterday took us through Denver....what a large city with massive roadways. However our trusty GPS, Rita Rightway, got us through the city without any problems. Denver sits along the mountains and has lots of interesting sights. As I was told at one time...it's not the destination, but the journey that takes you there that is the most interesting. We made camp outside of Pueblo West. This was an older RV Park that was somewhat run down. However, the lady that runs the place was very friendly and helpful. Our picnic table had a hole in the middle of it and was warped in several directions. But...at least there was a picnic table. The park in Casper, Wyoming where we stayed didn't even have a picnic table and the one we are at tonight south of Lamar, Colorado doesn't have a picnic table either. It seems that the flatter and dustier the site is the less amenities are available.
Colorado has a lot more trees that Wyoming and isn't nearly as windy. It was hot here today, 81F, so we have been sitting in the 5th wheel with the A/C on! Tomorrow we are heading to Boiling Springs State Park in Oklahoma. The plan is to stay there as a home base and then visit a few of the other State Parks that are within driving distance. The one that really interests us is Alabaster Caverns State Park.

Cheyenne WY

Today we went into Cheyenne to check the place out. This was a neat sign that we saw. Here is the building that it was sitting on the side of. There are alot of huge cowboy boots around the town. It is the same kind of idea as all the colorful cows that were around the streets of Calgary! Some of them are shown here.

Most of the houses here are made of brick of various colors. The think that amazed me was that they all have lawn space, not all crowded together like around Calgary!

We went to visit the Western Museum that tells the story of the Cheyenne Rodeo throughtout the years. There were alot of old wagons that are in very good condition. Wayne liked the one that was used to deliver oil, kerosene and axel grease!

That was interesting and actually is very similar to the Calgary Stampede. One of the big differences is they had cowboys that would come all the way from Hawaii to compete for the prizes.

Across Wyoming

Today we travelled the rest of the way across Wyoming to the capital city of Cheyenne. We found that WY is a very sparsely populated state, with more antelope than people or livestock!! It's quite awesome rock formations are definitely worth seeing though. We are going to head to Laramie tomorrow to see if we can get some better pictures to share with you, as the ones taken along the side of the road don't do the place justice. However the reststops are very well done and inviting places to stay for a bit.

Yesterday we went to see the site of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, between Billings MT and Casper WY. This was an interesting place to see. There was a large monument to honor all the men that gave their lives in the battle. There was also an area dedicated to the native people that fought in the battle. There were even gravemarkers to honor the horses that were used in the battle. In the same area there is a large cemetary where veterns from both world wars and other battles fought are buried along with their families.

Bozeman, MT

Our first stop along the way was to visit with Wayne's sister Carol and her family in Bozeman, MT. We arrived here on Saturday morning, just in time for breakfast. We had stayed at the Rest Stop just before Wolf Creek, MT, so were glad to arrive to hot coffee and a warm meal. It was great to have a visit, enjoy a roast beef meal with all the family and play some cards. Unfortunately both Wayne and I lost all of our quarters, but will look forward to winning them back on our next visit.

On Sunday we headed to Billings, MT where we will be staying until Tuesday morning then head south to Casper and Cheyenne, WY.
